Countdown to Christmas - Photography Tips

Tip 9: Bokeh

The first step to capturing bokeh is choosing a lens that will offer you the capability of blurring out the backgrounds  I used my 35mm, but you can still get similar effects without one.  Set your f-stop to it's lowest possible setting.  Usually f/1.4 works great.  Set your aperture as low (wide) as possible, pick a focus point, and ooooohhhhh ahhhhhhhh - BOKEH!

  1. An important part of getting those Christmas lights to look great is you have to seperate your subject a considerable distance from the light source. The further away the subject the bigger the lights become...but be carefull not to move too far away...about 6 feet is all you need for a shooting with a lens at 1.8.
